Firefighting for Service?

Problem.
I want to give back to my community in a way that is in line with my interests, abilities, and family responsibilities. Firefighting is one such possible domain.
Time Frame.

Description
Look into the requirements for training and volunteer time of being a firefighter.
Role
Volunteer

Solution.
Call the local fire stations to see what the training is like, the minimum time commitments, and what the lifestyle expectations are.
Rabbit Holes.
Since I'm considering moving, will also have to do this for North Carolina in the greater Raleigh area.
No-Gos.
I don't have to start training to consider this project complete. I just have to get a sense of what the commitments are.
I started this project to test an assumption: whether doing something like volunteer fire-fighting or search & rescue would meet the desire to serve my community in a physical, team-oriented, skillful way. I had been thinking of joingin the National Guard for some time, but new that the commitment, the time from home, and the risk of injury / death might be too much, not for me, but my family.
The more I dig into this life, the more I think that this will meet my needs. I have spoken with Williamson County Fire & Rescue, along with the Nolensville Fire Department. I am almost ready to sign up for training. But first things first...
My family is considering moving closer to other parts of our extended family in another state. We have discussed this for years. Before I make any decisions here, that decision needs to be made -- hopefully before the end of the year.
